HANYC is part of AHLA supports their minimum guidelines for going green.

1.Monitor your hotel’s electric, gas, and water usage.

2.Implement a towel reuse program.

3.Implement a linen reuse program.

4.Implement a recycling program.

5.Staff training on implementing green practices.

6.Providing information for guests on green practices.

7.Install energy efficient interior light bulbs.

8.Form an environmental committee to develop a green plan for energy/water/solid waste use.

9.Install digital thermostats in guestrooms and throughout the hotel.

10.Install 2.5-gallons per minute showerheads or less in all guestroom baths and any employee shower areas.

11.Install 1.6-gallon toilets in all guestrooms.

12.Implement a recycling program for hazardous materials found in fluorescent bulbs, batteries, and lighting ballasts through licensed service providers.

13.Purchase Energy Star labeled appliances and equipment.

14.All office paper products should have 20% or more post-consumer recycled content.

Established in 1878, the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc.  is one of the oldest professional trade associations in the nation. Its membership includes more than 260 of the finest hotels in New York City, representing more than 70,000 rooms and 32,000 employees. It is an internationally recognized leader in New York City’s $5 billion tourism industry.

As America’s oldest lodging association, New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association  offers programs and services to help add value to over 1,300 members in the industry and their properties. The Association also protects their members’ interests by representing them as their legislative voice before state government.

The mission of the American Green Lodging & Hospitality Association  is to educate and train the hospitality industry and all others that have an interest in the industry about the importance of becoming environmentally, economically and socially sustainable.

GOVERNMENT RESOURCES

The following government resources provides useful information that are specific to the hospitality industry and additional programs that will help reduce energy, waste and water use.

The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency is an agency of the federal government of the United States charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress.

All free services to help you track data. The mission of EPA Region 2 Hospitality is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment — air, water, and land — upon which life depends.

 

WasteWise is a free, voluntary EPA program through which organizations eliminate costly municipal solid waste and select industrial wastes, benefiting their bottom line and the environment. WasteWise participants can join as partners, endorsers, or both.

WaterSense, a partnership program by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, seeks to protect the future of our nation’s water supply by offering people a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes, and services.

Energy Star for Hospitality is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

The mission of the energy.gov is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.

 

Released in 2007, PlaNYC was an unprecedented effort undertaken by Mayor Bloomberg to prepare the city for one million more residents, strengthen our economy, combat climate change, and enhance the quality of life for all New Yorkers. The Plan brought together over 25 City agencies to work toward the vision of a greener, greater New York. Since then, we have made significant progress towards our long-term goals.

 

Mayor’s Water Challenge is the first public-private partnership proving a voluntary challenge to the private sector and aims to support the city-wide water conservation efforts.

 

In April, theMayor’s Food Challenge which asked restaurants to reduce the amount of their food waste sent to landfill by 50 percent. Since then, over 100 restaurants have joined the Challenge and are reducing their food waste. (You can read more about the Challenge here, if you’d like). The Challenge encourages waste diversion through several methods including composting as well as donation and waste prevention methods.

 

NON FOR PROFIT GREEN NY

Alliance for Clean Energy New York, INC.’s mission is to promote the use of clean, renewable electricity technologies and energy efficiency in New York state, in order to increase energy diversity and security, boost economic development, improve public health, and reduce air pollution.

Build it Green! NYC , is New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials. Our warehouse has everything from panel doors to high end refrigerators and shutters to movie props. Our mission is to keep these materials out of the landfill, while offering deep discounts on their resale.

Earth Day New York  is a low-overhead, broadly educational non-profit 501 organization that promotes environmental awareness and solutions.

 

Grow NYC is a hands-on non-profit which improves New York City’s quality of life through environmental programs that transform communities block by block and empower all New Yorkers to secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

MillionTreesNYC, one of the 127 PlaNYC initiatives, is a citywide, public-private program with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across the City’s five boroughs over the next decade.

 

The Washington, D.C.-based U.S.Urban Green Council (USGBC) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings.

 

OTHER SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES

UNEP, established in 1972, is the voice for the environment within the United Nations system. UNEP acts as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise use and sustainable development of the global environment.

UNICEF is committed to achieving those goals and works to improve its environmental footprint in five areas: facilities, meetings, procurement, staff engagement and travel. A number of UNICEF offices are performing assessments of their environmental footprint, setting the basis for annual reporting, allowing tracking of progress and evaluation of measures taken.  Current greening efforts in UNICEF offices around the world set a high standard for improving sustainability management efforts.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) serves as the international body for establishing and managing standards for sustainable tourism.  All of our programs and activities work toward this central mission.  GSTC is mostly a volunteer organization, consisting of experts in sustainable tourism and supported by organizations and individuals with a passion for ensuring that meaningful standards are available globally for sustainability in travel and tourism
