Gothamist: Can NY’s plan to convert hotels into affordable housing help alleviate homelessness? Some hope it will.

A year ago, Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers set aside $100 million to encourage real estate developers to take New York City’s vacant and underutilized hotels that were struggling due to a lack of guests during the pandemic and turn them into permanent housing for the homeless and low-income residents. NYC’s storied hotel industry celebrated an eagerly anticipated return to the spotlight during its annual “Red Carpet Hospitality Gala” hosted by the Hotel Association of New York City Foundation at Mandarin Oriental in Manhattan. The sold-out event drew hundreds of attendees as the HANYC Foundation honored Hilton Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Laura Fuentes and John Gore Organization President and Broadway League Chair Lauren Reid. Loews Hotels Chairman & CEO Jonathan M. Tisch introduced the honorees.
