Another loser in the race was Airbnb, as the Hotel and Motel Trades Council put in a substantial effort for Alcantara and can expect her to be an ally in the Senate, where legislation could break the home-rental company’s business model in New York state. The union represents workers at hotels that compete with Airbnb for tourists, many of whom book home-sharing rentals that are illegal because they are shorter than 30 days and the homeowner is not present. The union has teamed up with the hotel and real estate industries to push Albany to crack down on Airbnb transactions that violate the little-known law….
