Beginning October 1, Airbnb will begin collecting and remitting the 9% Transient Room Lodging tax on behalf of hosts and guests on all eligible bookings in Bay City, Oregon.

Guests will be charged the appropriate taxes on their Airbnb bill and Airbnb will then remit the taxes collected to the city. Guests will see this as a separate line item on their booking receipt.

“This agreement between Airbnb and the City of Bay City should be a benefit to short-term rental hosts and smooth the collection process of transient lodging tax funds, which are used primarily to enhance tourism within the City of Bay City,” said Mayor Shaena Peterson.

“We are excited to reach this agreement with the City of Bay City,” said Laura Spanjian, Airbnb Public Policy Manager for the Pacific Northwest. “Agreements like this ensure communities benefit from home sharing, while easing the administrative burden for cities and making it easier for Airbnb hosts, the vast majority of whom are middle class people sharing their own home, to comply with local tax laws.”

With this new agreement, Bay City joins a list of more than 300 jurisdictions globally where Airbnb is collecting and remitting hotel taxes on behalf of our hosts and guests, including 18 other jurisdictions in Oregon.

For families in Bay City, Airbnb makes it possible to earn meaningful extra money and make ends meet. This is important supplemental income during a time of historic income inequality.

At the same time, Airbnb is democratizing travel by creating an affordable way for travelers to authentically explore every corner of the world. To date, there have been more than 160 million guest arrivals in Airbnb listings around the globe.
