With its narrow wooden stairwell and view over a painter’s studio in a 16th-century courtyard, Yolande Finkelsztajn’s flat bears the hallmark of Parisian authenticity. Yet she says the once convivial mood in her beloved Marais district is being destroyed by Airbnb, a website on which homeowners can rent their properties to tourists. She is on the front line of a holiday rental battle dividing Paris. On one side are the owners who receive up to four times more income than by renting to traditional tenants. On the other are residents exasperated at the mass tourism in their blocks of flats. In the middle are politicians delighted at the additional tax revenue but worried that it will lead to an explosion of anger….
