Guests who book stays at short-term vacation rentals in Schaumburg — including an elaborate treehouse advertised for rent on Airbnb.com — will be subject to a new 8 percent tax. Village trustees, unanimously and without comment, approved an ordinance Tuesday night to make it clear that short-term vacation rental properties listed on sites like Airbnb and Vacation Rentals By Owner are subject to the same tax levied on hotels and motels in the village, in addition to county and state taxes. The move followed the discovery by village officials last year of a furnished treehouse advertised for rent on Airbnb, a popular online platform where homeowners can rent out rooms and entire houses to travelers….
