The migrant crisis has been a windfall for hotels, but Vijay Dandapani has sought to ensure stability for his industry that has struggled since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hotel industry advocate recently renewed a $1.04 billion emergency city contract after the city has already spent $2.3 billion to house asylum-seekers. He warned that the City Council’s Safe Hotels Act would drive up prices but withdrew his objections after a series of negotiations. Now Dandapani is focused on combating city legislation that would ease restrictions on Airbnb.

Sustainable Hospitality
Our vision is to transform the New York City hotel industry into a recognized champion of sustainable hospitality in the United States and in the World. On this external site we share best practices, innovations and sustainable initiatives.

Human Trafficking Training
Human trafficking is incredibly widespread and our hotels have an important role to play in keeping our community and our hotels safe from this harm. HANYC is now partnering with Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) to provide FREE human trafficking training for HANYC members and their staff.

HANYC will be hosting a seminar/webinar presented by Kara Rakowski and John Walsh of Belkin Burden Goldman, LLP on Tuesday, April 14th, at 10am at 34 E. 51st Street in the 7th floor conference room. Breakfast will be served.
Ms. Rakowski will be discussing the status of recent court cases involving hotel guests who check in and request a lease and investigating whether a hotel qualifies for a Luxury Hotel Exemption.
Mr. Walsh will be discussing risks that are heightened for hotel conversions as compared to ground up new construction. This will include construction issues that are exacerbated for conversion projects as compared to ground up (design challenges, issues with imperfect information about existing conditions, and longer project timelines). He will also discuss some key contract terms and language that can help protect owners’ interests for these situations and how owners may be able to recoup some costs due to the recent Supreme Court decision repealing tariffs enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
We encourage all members to attend, either in person or by Zoom. To register for the event, please click here:
