A Montreal judge has made a decision that could make local tenants think twice before renting out their pad to tourists. After 2 years in court, Verdun landlord Tristan Pungartnik has been granted the right to change the locks on an apartment his tenant was renting out for profit on Airbnb. Ted Wright with the Westmount Legal Clinic says the ruling sought to ensure the security of other tenants in the building as well as to protect the landlord. “It could change the landlord’s insurance because he’s rented for solely residential,” says Wright. “If anything happens his insurance could be ruled null and void, that means a total loss of the building if something really bad happens.”
