Oakland’s City Planning Department recently took comments from the public about ways to regulate Airbnb and other short-term rental sites amidst concerns that the once-affordable city is quickly growing out of reach for many residents. In doing so, the city must try to balance the desire to allow renters and homeowners the opportunity to earn extra income by occasionally renting out an empty room, without encouraging those who decide to circumvent the city’s rent control laws by renting out their units on a perpetually short-term basis…
